Values by Design refers to embedding ethical principles into every stage of a product’s lifecycle, from conception to deployment. In the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it’s important to recognize that AI itself does not have inherent values—it is a tool shaped by human creators. Therefore, Values by Design in AI requires identifying those responsible for ensuring that the development and deployment of AI systems align with ethical, sustainable, and human-centered principles.
These values should permeate all aspects of the product, including the materials used, the treatment of employees, and the design of decision-making workflows. Additionally, considerations such as transparency, accessibility, inclusion, and community involvement must be prioritized. The goal is to ensure that AI systems uphold human dignity, promote social good, and operate with fairness and accountability.
A challenge with Values by Design in AI is that many Values by Design frameworks focus on AI’s impact in isolation, this can lead to a disconnection from the wider world, where communities may have different ethical standards or sustainability practices. To be effective, AI design must incorporate diverse perspectives and take into account the needs and values of all stakeholders, ensuring it serves the greater good and contributes to a more equitable society.
