Case Study: Research ways to protect children from social media addiction

Creative AI Literacy Through Drawing and Dialogue

As part of my Master’s in Design for Responsible AI, I created Seeing the Algorithm—a creative research project that helps children and young people gain AI literacy by drawing the algorithms that shape their digital lives, especially on social media.

What We Did

  • In school-based workshops, participants visualize how algorithms work through drawing.

  • These drawings are transformed into images (and optionally t-shirts or mugs), sparking conversation at home and school.

  • The project is self-sustaining, funded through sales to families, with no institutional budget needed.

Why It Matters

Participants learn that algorithms are not neutral or automatic, but human-made and programmable. Through reflection and dialogue, they begin to question, critique, and understand the power and potential of AI in everyday life—especially in relation to addiction, agency, and influence.

Long-Term Vision

With a sufficient number of collected drawings, we aim to build an archive of generational insight—a visual ethnography of how young people perceive and relate to programmed systems today.
